Jeri Goodman Glassart
Statement
Jeri Goodman GlassArt was founded in 1990 as a natural evolution of the artist’s previous ceramic studio. The business is a collaborative effort of Jeri’s artistic talents in glass design and her husband Bill’s creative work in metal forming and woodworking for the stands that support the glass.
Jeri Goodman GlassArt designs are created exclusively using an ancient technique known as “kiln-formed” glassworking. It is a process that evolved from ancient Egypt, one which was largely abandoned when the Romans developed the more mass-producible methods of glass-blowing. Kiln-forming differs from blown-glass in that the pieces of the design are first hand-cut from sheets by the artist. The assembled design is then fused together flat in a computerized kiln which accurately controls the temperature. This flat is then placed over a forming mold and fired a second time to give the piece its final shape. With lower temperatures than required for blown-glass, the effects of layering and texture can be integrated into the design, and remain in the final form. It is a time-consuming process which can take over a week for a single piece, depending upon the design. One of Jeri’s objectives is to bring a new awareness of this craft’s unique style and form to today’s contemporary glass collector.
