Special Friday Night Concert-July 31,2009-6-10pm Taste in San Pedro

Current Events
April 12, 2014 - April 27, 2014
The theme of this event is to build excitement in personal art collecting. This exhibition will feature affordable, collectible, original art that will be priced at $300 or less. Many people have very little experience in purchasing original, one of a kind art. Others don't feel that they can afford to purchase original art. Still others, have never experienced the excitement of meeting an artist, making a connection with that artist and collecting his or her art. The artists will be present at the opening event to meet and talk with the patrons. We encourage opening night visitors to question the artist about their techniques, mediums and what inspirers them. This event will be an excellent opportunity to start an art collection that anyone would be proud of and that could someday be of great value to your family.

The Downtown Art Center (DAC) Gallery is proud to present Transmissions, a group exhibition featuring sculptures and mixed media works on paper by fifteen local artists. Curated by Virginia Arce and Nat George, the exhibition focuses on works produced by this group while sharing studio space, influencing and informing each other's art practice as colleagues and mentors. Unconsciously, certain common traits started to emerge, such as strong subversive and outsider qualities. All point to a rejection of tradition, while some celebrate an almost counterintuitive use of materials. Transmissions speaks of the unconscious connections formed while working creatively in a shared environment.

Artists: Mildred Anderson, Eugenia Barbuc, Shaka Gaston, Bessie Kunath, Jameel Linzy, Adriane Mota, Juan Carlos Ornelas, Juan Pierri, Arturo Retana, Leonard Salazar, Michael Schaeffer, Harvey Schwartz, Thomas Sedgwick, Marvin Singer, Jesse Warford.

COSMIC DANCE: JoAnne Artman Gallery is pleased to announce Rimi Yang's Solo Exhibition: Cosmic Dance! Drawing on a fascination with myth, history, and art practices from both the East and West, Korean-American painter Rimi Yang has synthesized a uniquely compelling visual lexicon. Yang's diverse influences come to play in lush, vibrant canvases that explore the dualities of the human experience as well as the way the world is universally entwined. Whether figural or abstract, Yang's work is remarkable for its expressive brushstrokes and evocative sense of wonder.

This spring, Hay Hill Gallery is proud to be presenting a retrospective of paintings and sculpture from artist Oleg Prokofiev. Featuring over sixty works, the show brings together two major stages of his life; before and after exile from Russia. This exciting exhibition leads us from the 1960s USSR period into the popular 'white-on-white' canvases of the 1970s, his revolutionary sculptures and last paintings.

This spring, the PMA will showcase an intimate selection of photographs and drawings that George Daniell (United States, 1911-2002) created on Monhegan Island during the summer of 1936, at the advent of his artistic career. In search of adventure and escape from a sweltering August in New York City, Daniell sojourned to Maine, where he spent the month fervently documenting the island that captured his heart and imagination. Drawn from the PMA's permanent collection, the featured works show the young artist honing his eye for composition and tonal value while depicting Monhegan's distinctive topography and character with its shingled cottages, hardy people, and wistful afternoons.

Fine Lines: American Drawings from the Brooklyn Museum presents more than 100 exceptional and rarely seen drawings and sketchbooks from the Brooklyn Museum's world-renowned collection of American art. Dating from the late 18th through the mid-20th century, these masterworks encompass a wide range of techniques, styles, and media. Among the 74 featured artists are Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, William Trost Richards, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, William Glackens, Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, and Marsden Hartley. With its significant body of aesthetically remarkable and historically important works, Fine Lines showcases drawing as a dynamic art form in the United States across nearly two centuries. The exhibition is organized into six thematic sections: the human figure, costume studies, portraiture, narrative scenes, landscapes, and urban imagery. This thematic presentation surveys subjects of enduring interest to American artists, while also highlighting the diversity of drawing practices in pre-1945 American art.

Early October sees the publication of 'Italy's Private Gardens: an Inside View' by Helena Attlee, with photographs by Alex Ramsay. The publishers are Frances Lincoln Ltd. This is a richly illustrated and thoughtfully written look at some of Italy's finest private gardens, by two of Britain's top garden writers and photographers (authors of the highly successful 'Gardens of Japan').

Eva Fidjeland’s Innovative Style of Digital Art

Eva Fidjeland’s “Metamorphosis”

A new trend in visual art is emerging due to artist Eva Fidjeland’s implementation of an innovative, creative approach to the process of manufacturing art. The artist is known internationally for creating in a variety of mediums, from the traditional canvas to digital, and is currently presenting her work in a new style of collaborative art. The artist is displaying her creative expertise within the various mediums and is also transforming her physical expression and character for introduction within her creations. Fidjeland is seamlessly incorporating aspects of digital technology with visual and performing art, creating unique works that tell stories through intricate details.

Eva Fidjeland’s “Dragon”

Fidjeland’s extensive collection of digital photography captures the aesthetic details of her subjects, including still, animal and plant life. In a digital work entitled “Dragon”, Fidjeland presents a close perspective upon her subject, highlighting multiple intricate aesthetic details. Notice how the detail of the wings is of a different aesthetic quality than the legs and other areas of art. In the midst of these details, emerges the dragon fly’s expression, providing the observer with a neighboring view of its moment in time.

Eva Fidjeland’s “The Red Lady II”

Various stages of human expression are now at the center of Fidjeland’s innovative style in art. In a work entitled “The Red Lady II”, the artist takes a snapshot of a human expression, and accentuates specific details through texture, color and shading. The artist’s creative decisions, particularly pertaining the color and shading, establishes a precise expression of emotion and tone. Texture is a key visual factor within the art as the observers learn about Red Lady’s character through her choice of color in lipstick, the smoothness of her skin, and the covering of an eye with her hair.

Eva Fidjeland’s “The Birdwoman X”

Each digital photograph establishes a character through expression and visual detail. The character in “Birdwoman X”, for example, possesses a different style and emotional nature than the character Red Lady. Birdwoman’s color and shading, relative to the character’s hair, eyes, skin and lips, establishes character through exquisite shadings of brown, red and green. Performing a comparative facial analysis of the two characters will result in the depiction of two unique forms of expression.

Fidjeland is pioneering a new style in visual art that uses digital technology to place emphasis on the expressions and details within creations. Her work is innovative for seamlessly collaborating visual and performing art with digital techniques. The artist is embodying the concept of collaborative art through her creative process and details present in her creations.

Eva Fidjeland´s Art Captures the Human Experience

When art captures the essence of the human experience, it reveals aspects of humanity under a bright spotlight. The art emphasizes these qualities directly, pointing observers toward images that will challenge our current perspectives of the world. The artist, as the creator of such pieces of art, is responsible for the design and creation of these images; their process is similar to a process of unveiling, in which the artist will seek to bring the observer closer to truths through images.

Eva Fidjeland´s art brings observers closer to the process of heealing. Fidjeland´s art exists within an extraordinary global context. The world has separated the concept of healing with a dichotomous line. Eastern cultures typically incorporate healing concepts within their aspects of a life holistically, while many western cultures view healing as the recovery of illness or injury. Many citizens of the world carry a perception of healing that lays somewhere in between.

Eva Fidjeland´s art emphasizes these perceptions through captivating mixed media design, color and examination of the human body. Eva Fidjeland´s art asserts the concept of healing is far from esoteric; promoting the idea that healing is a natural, organic part of the human condition that connects us to the world in which we live.

Primary Forms with a Bold Function

I like the slight melancholy mystery of these images. In general, the softened color palette and contrast evokes a faded memory, but the primary forms have a bold function.

`Evolution´ employes a primordial form, spiraling up out of the water like a mythic sea creature. I also see the faintly grainy quality and washed out magenta tonality as harkening back to old photographic documentary film, though I´m unsure of the media/process actually employed here. I find the vertical orientation is also unexpected for the surreal landscape, as the weighty spiral form doesn´t appear able to sustain its upward thrust for long, as it curls into itself.

The piece entitled `Liz´ is an enticing picture as well; some more direct photographic reference to lizards is evident; but there is also a diffused manipulation of the image that muffles direct or overt pictorial representation. The resulting image calls to mind pictographic symbolism from a host of ethnic traditions and artistic eras. In this way, `Liz´ rminds me of a mellowed Florence Putterman painting. So the piece seems less about the natural subject depicted, and more about the state of flux, or evanescent movement.

Alejandro Cabeza Contemporary artist, ALEJANDRO CABEZA
A painting career mainly supported the use of a technique Impressionist art, and perhaps because of this fact that the tables revolve around the landscape, the composition of figures and portraits, which has reached the appreciation of critics and audiences.

Alejandro Cabeza suddenly grown an impressionist painting that is totally different from the styles, fashions and what you get in the beginning of XXI century. It is a creator of strong character with his nature and understanding the creative act is the opposite of the general taste. has a personal language that does not match this with the ways and fashions of the turn of the century and has a world unequivocal obsessions.

Surprisingly long can maintain almost constantly mesmerized the audience, which accepts joyful vision of landscapes, portraits and compositions of great beauty. In his works, I'm sure the viewer can see a huge variety of subjects-landscapes, seascapes, portraits and figure compositions treated with excellent technical and educational rigor, as befits old formulas Impressionists. by ALEJANDRO CABEZA

Tender Anatomy, Vesna Jovanovic
Sprouting vertebrae, multicolored intestines, and floating ribs appear in Tender Anatomy, a solo exhibition of works on paper by Chicago artist Vesna Jovanovic. On display at Packer Schopf Gallery in July/August 2013, this work evokes scientific illustration as Jovanovic combines spontaneous inkblots with delicate renderings of plants, human organs, and architectural forms.

Tender Anatomy straddles the line between fact and fiction, inviting the audience to reach beyond the physical body. Squirmy and intuitive, these drawings personify Jovanovic’s visceral responses to unfamiliar environments and experiences. In one instance, she describes how “the dry air, strong sunlight, smoke plumes, and various other environmental factors affected my body as I explored the high desert near Santa Fe.” The foundation of this beautifully layered work is spilled ink on paper, a material that generates unpredictable shapes reminiscent of human entrails.

With a background in science, Jovanovic worked in research laboratories early in her career. This is her first solo show with Packer Schopf Gallery. by Vesna Jovanovic

SHOULD PAUL RUBENS RAPE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF LEUCIPPUS BE SHOWN IN A PUBLIC VENUE?, Gail Daleys Fine Art
Should paintings showing graphic violence like rape, sexual themes or nude statues be shown in a public setting such as a Library or Mall? As a visual artist who sets up art displays in public places, I am very aware of our American society’s standards of what is considered acceptable for public consumption. All societies have these standards of behavior and yes, the standards do evolve with society. 60 years ago, Tarzan of the Apes was considered too sexy for the libraries! What is acceptable in Europe is quite different than what is acceptable in America also. American standards are usually much more conservative than those prevalent in Europe. In this financially strapped time, Libraries are very dependent on donations to purchase their materials. Let’s face it; donors are simply not going to purchase materials they don’t like and they won’t give money to organizations that do. Just as a person isn’t allowed to scream “fire!” in a crowded area for fear of causing panic, as a society we will always need to make judgments as to what is appropriate for our public libraries to spend their money on. And yes, in the past governments have been very heavy handed on what was considered appropriate. On that subject, the right of Private adult individuals to decide what they will read and see must always be defended. The internet has virtually ensured that free speech will be protected; As long as it exists, artists and book publishers will be permitted to sell these items (in the appropriate venues), and I don’t think we need to be too worried about government imposed censorship.
Is there a difference between a Rubens classical painting and Playboy? Most of us think so. And yet some of his art is probably more graphic than a Playboy centerfold and this image certainly shows violence toward women. Nevertheless most museums and libraries would have no hesitation in displaying it in a public venue.
A great many "women’s romance" novels do contain what used to be called soft or “vanilla” porn (sexual situations which are sometimes graphically described although I find the authors usually use euphemisms). Sometimes the cover art is pretty revealing also; I can remember a couple of times I was actively embarrassed to be seen reading some novels because of the cover, even though the story inside was much less graphic than the book jacket! These novels ARE purchased by libraries; I have checked them out myself. The main difference between hard pornography and these novels seems to be women’s romance books usually don't also contain profanity in describing the sexual adventures of their heroines. Although the libraries do purchase books, videos and games containing graphic sexual themes or graphic violence, these materials usually aren't kept in the juvenile section. Most county libraries require a parent’s permission for a child to check out materials from the adult section. Is this censorship? Absolutely. Is it appropriate? As a parent, I have think so. Children often lack the maturity to put what they are reading and seeing in context and require adult interpretation to help them do so. If an adult is there to provide an explanation of, oh—visuals of the Nazi death camps or the Manson murders or the books “Helter Skelter” and Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” both of which contain crime scene photos, then it can be appropriate for a child to see those images or read those books. Only a parent can truly judge whether or not their child could handle such graphic images, or if the child has enough of a grasp on the difference between reality and fantasy to be allowed to play a video game that is rated “mature”, read an explicit book, look at a Rubens painting or watch such a movie. For myself when setting up a public art display I find the following criteria helpful in judging whether or not reading matter or an art display will be acceptable to the general public: 1) the context in which it appears; i.e. A painting, recording or a book containing graphic sex or violence will be much more likely to be acceptable if it contains historical facts. 2) The age of the audience the video game, book or display is intended for. I agree with the view held by most Americans’ the subject matter should be age appropriate. So Yes, Censorship can be a positive force if used properly.

Summer 2012 Residencies, Vesna Jovanovic
Pareidolia is the psychological phenomenon of seeing a recognizable image in something otherwise random, like clouds or wood grain. About a decade ago, I spilled and blotted some ink on paper, and began drawing what I saw in the ink: laboratory equipment and glassware. That was the beginning of a body of work that I continue to cultivate and transform. Last summer (2011) I was an artist in residence at the Santa Fe Art Institute in the high desert of New Mexico, which resulted in a new variation of these drawings.

I recently received acceptance letters from two artist residencies in upstate New York. During my residencies, I will pursue a new series of Pareidolia drawings, this time inspired by my two-month exploration of the Hudson Valley.

The Year draws to a Close, Roslyn Rose
Amazingly, the year is almost over. I am involved with filling out paperwork for 2011 exhibits. It has been a very busy year, both personally and professionally. The highlight was my October solo exhibition at Ceres Gallery in New York City. The opening was listed on the National Arts Month website. The attached picture, Playground, was shown at Ceres Gallery.

I was represented in some great national and state group shows and won a few nice awards; worked with my webmaster, Joe Corrado, to produce a new website; and survived some health problems. In October my work was part of five art venues during the Annual Jersey City Art Tour, including hob'art and Pro Arts gallery exhibits.

During the past year, I was again occupied with Hoboken's hob'art cooperative gallery meetings, shows, and Public Relations. The local news media was especially generous with reports about our group and solo member presentations. Our first Windows on Washington exhibits were held in a lovely empty storefront at 716 Washington Street. A third art happening in the same venue should be open to the public before the end of 2010.

As part of the Board of the Hoboken Arts & Industries Council, I was encouraged by our Mayor's support and the feedback from the company working on the city's Master Plan. Maybe we will get an art district and we will save the few old factory buildings for studios for the remaining artists and artisans in Hoboken, NJ.

I have great hope for the arts in 2011. by Roslyn Rose

Batteries - You have the power to make a difference!, Fort Myers Lighting
When someone mentions batteries, we often think of common flashlight batteries or batteries for the numerous remote controls in our house used for everything from dimming our lights to adjusting the speed of our ceiling fans. If you look a little deeper, you will find that batteries are used everywhere out of plain site. Many times understanding the past gives us a perspective on how long batteries have been used. Looking back at the history of batteries, the earliest suspected batteries known may date back 2000 or more years. The “Bagdad Battery” due to the geographical area of it’s discovery or sometimes referred to as the Parthian Battery is made from a terracotta jar a copper cylinder and an iron rod, thought to be bathed in a mild acidic solution such as lemon or grape juice or vinegar to generate an electrical current perhaps used to electroplate gold onto silver objects in ancient cultures. Modern day battery technology dates back about 200 years with advancements in battery technology being driven by the devices using electrical power, telegraph, mining operations, NASA for the space program and more recently personal electronics; cell phones and i-pods.

The general principal of a battery is to store power and have a controlled discharged of the power at a time and place where it is needed. The principal of this is really taken for granted in today’s society. Think of all the places batteries are now used and most of the time taken for granted; cell phones, toys, I-pods, Kindles, not to mention the emergency equipment in buildings; emergency lights, exit signs, smoke detectors, fire and security alarm systems and the list goes on and on. The advancement in today’s battery technology is being driven by the search for smaller and more powerful batteries for personal electronics devices, electric cars, and medical equipment and much more, allowing people to work on laptops longer, become more mobile with new medical devices and cell phones. Battery technology also lends itself to work with a new generation of LED lights which allow smaller and longer lasting flashlights, and other portable devices which need less power due to the lower wattage draw of energy efficient LED diodes.

The point is that batteries are used everywhere. They key is in using the most energy efficient batteries when you have the choice. Frontier Lighting can provide you with all the power you need!

Frontier Lighting is a Florida based wholesale lighting distributor. Since 1987 we have been providing Clearwater, Tampa, Lakeland, Orlando, Bradenton, Sarasota, Ft Myers Naples and Marco Island with quality lighting products and free daily delivery to commercial, industrial, hotels and restaurants. We can provide you with all types of batteries, regular alkaline or long life and rechargeable “flashlight” type batteries used in flashlights, remote controls, radios, children’s toys, smoke detectors, industrial tools and inspection devices and the larger sealed lead acid rechargeable (SLA) and Ni-cad, (short for nickel cadmium) batteries used in the emergency equipment in buildings such as emergency lights and exit signs, security systems, computer UPS systems. Investigating digital art..., WORLDSCAPES paintings
I've been an artist of various kinds all my life. Started with painting and branched out from there. Now I'm coming full circle back to painting - but it's painting in the 21st century. Digital. I find it's very like regular painting with gooey paints and brushes, and in other ways it's so different. When I want an effect, I just poke a button and find a list of effects to use. I find I have to know just what I want to do before I do it, however backing out and trying something else is easy too. The choices I can pick in color and fills is far beyond anything I could ever think of the old way. Also the "happy accident" leads down other unexpected roads that are fun to follow. Even with my "older" eyesight, I can get into detail and noodle something forever. Detail runs in my DNA, I guess. I used to be a cartoonist in the animation business making films a frame at a time. Then I was a tapestry weaver making hangings a thread at a time. I've been a book binder for many years making a book a page at a time. Now I'm back to detail again. Making a picture a stroke at a time. What I find most intriguing is the blending and shading in digital. It's both difficult and exciting when just the right surface comes forth. Of course I couldn't do it at all without my Wacom pen. Painting with a mouse is like using a bar of soap. As in regular old painting, one has to know WHEN TO STOP! I studied painting many many years ago with some really hot shot painters, and that's the one thing I learned about painting: know when to stop! So I shall. by WORLDSCAPES paintings

A Productive Week, Roslyn Rose
Missed keeping my blog up to date because of health problems, but now I am back in the real world. It has been a productive week in spite of the hurricane-like conditions. Liz Cohen, President of hob-art cooperative gallery, has secured our first empty storefront windows to be filled by a member artist. We were interviewed by a local newspaper reporter and our Council members are in line for a photo op, cutting a ribbon on opening day. More details to follow on this activity. I spent the morning touring the Monroe Art Center in Hoboken, NJ in order to pick out a wall to hang my artwork during next weekend's Digable Art Festival. All day Saturday and Sunday, there will be visual arts, crafts, theater, and more, plus music and dancing all night on Saturday evening. Interview with local newspaper, Roslyn Rose
Friday, January 1, 2010 Jersey Journal Interview HOB'ART SHOW CELEBRATES LOCAL ARTISTS Thursday, December 31, 2009 By MARIAM AYAD WW STAFF WRITER Photography, paintings, mixed media and other artwork are on exhibit as the hob'art Cooperative Gallery continues its Holiday Exhibition at Eureka Market Art Gallery at 259 First St. in Hoboken until Jan. 10. Hob'art's mission is to give the community exposure to local New Jersey artists, although some of the artists in the group are from Manhattan. Hob'art is eight years old and hopes to find a permanent home in which to showcase members' work. In the meantime, it leases space. Hob'art member Roslyn Rose has a unique passion: combining decades-old photographs with her own, more recent ones. She calls her creations "photographic montages." One of her works at the Holiday Exhibition has an old photo cutout of a building labeled "Here to Eternity," which was a museum dedicated to Frank Sinatra. The building is contrasted by one of Rose's more recent color photos in the background. Rose started her mixed photo creations after she found some old family photos, like one of her mother's wedding. When friends and family learned of her new artwork, they began sending Rose old photos from their families. Rose usually cuts out the people from the older photos and places her full-color photographer in the background to complement the work. "The earliest photos I have are studio photos, and people are very stiff and grim," Rose said. "I've taken those and put them against an elaborate background." Liz Cohen, hob'art president, also has some of her work displayed at the exhibit. Her photographs are part of a series she did with her childhood doll. The particular series at the exhibit are of the doll set in a local Hoboken background, like on the brick walkway on Court Street. Other featured pieces include oil paintings on paper or canvas, mixed-media piece - one made with pacemakers on wood - glass paintings, linocuts and others. Because of Eureka Gallery's large rooms, hob'art is able to display more work than in past years' Holiday Exhibitions. Hob'art members won't be able to enjoy the gallery for long. Eureka Gallery, and other buildings adjacent to it, have been sold. by Roslyn Rose

There are only 2 week left in 2009 and we are coming to the end of a very productive year. This year was full of exploring different styles and techniques. One of the things I discovered is my love of fretwork and the intricate designs of different eras such as "Victorian", "Art Nouveau" , and the "Art and Craft" movement. I love the swirls and nature oriented details of many of the fabrics, interior furniture & accessories and fine art of those times. All of these wonderful areas of style and creativity has influence my style as well and "Victorian Bloom" is just one of those pieces that show that influence. I loved working in copper and I love combining different styles of chain. The lampwork beads in this piece were just that added something which was needed to pull this design all together. These types of pieces make me look forward to what coming in 2010. Well here is this weeks entry "Victorian Bloom" Enjoy Take Care and Keep Creating!!!! Sculpted Garden Wilderness Park Plant List, Sculpted Gardens
The newly designed sculpted garden at the center of Wilderness Park features a spiral path of decomposed granite and recycled concrete. Bordered by wind swept grasses and native plants, the design demonstrates how drought tolerant plants can thrive in our Southern California climate. by Sculpted Gardens

Sculpted Garden, Redondo Beach Wilderness Park, Sculpted Gardens
Inspired by art and nature see how the grass field in the center of Wilderness Park was transformed into a beautiful drought tolerant garden. The California Coastal Oak anchors the design and a living sphere adds a new exciting element to the park. Fragrant Rosemary, Lavender, Salivias, Perennials and succulents flower throughout the year. These plants attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other creatures indigenous to our urban environment. by Sculpted Gardens
